My grades aren't loading

If your grades aren't showing up in BetterCampus, there's usually a simple fix. This guide walks through the most common reasons and how to solve them.

Quick checks

Before diving into detailed troubleshooting, try these steps first:

  1. Make sure you're on a Canvas page — BetterCampus only works when you're logged into your school's Canvas site. Open Canvas in your browser and navigate to your grades or a course page.

  2. Refresh the page — Sometimes Canvas doesn't fully load all the data BetterCampus needs. A quick refresh usually fixes this.

  3. Confirm you're signed into Canvas — If your Canvas session expired, you won't see any grades. Check that you can access your courses normally.

Common causes and fixes

You're not on Canvas

BetterCampus only activates when it detects you're on a Canvas page. If you're on a different site or your school uses a custom Canvas URL, the extension won't load your grades.

Fix: Navigate to your school's Canvas website (the URL usually looks like yourschool.instructure.com or canvas.yourschool.edu). If your school uses a custom address that BetterCampus doesn't recognize, add a custom Canvas URL.

Canvas didn't fully load

BetterCampus waits for Canvas to finish loading before it can fetch your grades. If the page is still loading or got stuck, your grades won't appear.

Fix: Wait a few seconds for the page to fully load, then refresh if nothing appears.

Your Canvas session expired

BetterCampus pulls your grades directly from Canvas — but it can only do that if you're signed in. If you've been away for a while, Canvas might have logged you out.

Fix: Sign back into Canvas through your school's normal login process, then refresh the page.

Your school's Canvas setup

Some schools customize their Canvas configuration, which can sometimes affect how data loads. This is rare, but it can happen.

Fix: If grades work for some courses but not others, or if your friends at the same school see grades but you don't, try these steps:

  • Try a different browser (Chrome works best)

  • Clear your browser cache and reload Canvas

  • Check if your school requires VPN access for Canvas

Free vs Pro grade features

Both Free and Pro plans show your grades in the grades page, but some advanced features differ:

  • Free plan: Grade trends, basic GPA calculator (class-level only), one default grade goal

  • Pro plan: Advanced grade tracking, GPA calculator at class and task level, custom grade goals

Still not working?

If you've tried everything above and your grades still aren't loading:

  1. Make sure BetterCampus is installed and enabled in your browser extensions
