A parent's guide to BetterCampus
BetterCampus is a free Chrome extension used by over 2 million students to make their school's Canvas LMS easier and more organized to use. This guide explains what it does, what it can see, and what parents should know.
What BetterCampus does
BetterCampus is an add-on that runs inside your child's web browser. It enhances the Canvas LMS they use at school by adding:
Custom themes and dark mode to reduce eye strain
A better to-do list and assignment planner
Grade tracking and a GPA calculator
Study tools like flashcards and AI-powered notes
BetterCampus sits on top of Canvas — it doesn't replace it, and it has no special access to your child's school account or grades beyond what Canvas already shows to your child.
Age requirements
Students must be at least 13 years old to create a BetterCampus account. Students under 13 can still use basic features like themes without creating an account — in that mode, no personal information like name, email, or date of birth is collected.
What data is collected
When a student creates an account, BetterCampus collects:
Name, email address, and date of birth (for age verification)
Optional school information (school name, graduation year)
Content the student creates: themes, notes, flashcards, and study sets
BetterCampus does not sell student data, does not use it for advertising, and does not share it with third parties for unrelated purposes.
What BetterCampus cannot see
Your child's Canvas password
Their browsing activity outside of Canvas
Content they type into Canvas (emails, assignments, discussions)
Is it safe?
Yes. BetterCampus is listed on the Chrome Web Store, has over 2 million users, and has a published privacy policy. It is not affiliated with Instructure or Canvas — it's an independent tool made by students.
